Photo Friday: Making The Best Of It

We are not really beach  or hot weather people. As in, with 2 blondes and 2 redheads we are a sunscreen companies best customer. My kids sweat, a lot. They turn red and cranky and want to find air conditioning asap. They are not fans of super heat, but if we stayed home during the hottest months of the year we would miss out on so many amazing opportunities and travel experiences.

So, we make the best of it! Last September we headed to Charleston, a humid, hot city on the water. A gorgeous city, but hot. Did I mention hot? We packed up some hats, the bathing suits, lots of sunscreen, and took sweaty pictures of our kids. We found fountains to splash in and ice cream to eat. With lots of water, a double stroller and snacks they enjoyed themselves in spite of the soaring temperatures.

I love Charleston, and can’t wait to visit with my son…we have family close by in Hilton Head, so I’m hoping we’ll get there again soon. You guys definitely made the most if your trip–what fun! As a freckle-faced red head (turned almost brown from the Seattle grays), I’m with you!

We have never been to Hilton Head and I have always heard it is great for kids, and it is only like 3 hours from us, so we really should go someday!

Yes, you definitely should–absolutely perfect for families. My parents moved down there when I was in college, so I ended up living on the island for a few years…I love going back to visit–such a beautiful place.

He looks so happy in that fountain! I’ve never been to Charleston, but I imagine that the climate is much like it is in Malaysia year round. I took my kids and their friends to the beach here today. My kids and I have a medium skin tone, so I didn’t bother putting on sunscreen since we’d be out there for less than an hour. Then, I looked over at their blonde hair, blue-eyed, fair skinned friend and reallized he was getting a sunburn. Oops! That’s what I thought of when I saw the picture of your kids. You must really have to protect them from the UV.

Fountains are the best way to cool off on hot days! We are a family of fair-skinned quick burners too so I know exactly what you mean – should buy stock in the sunscreen companies! ;) I have heard that Charleston is a lovely city – hope to visit some day, but maybe not in summer.
